The Bay County Racquet Club located at 515 Leonards Lane, Cambridge, MD 21613 was built in 1976 and has continued as Dorchester County’s only indoor tennis facility for over 40 years. The late James G. Busick, former Dorchester County School Superintendent and tennis enthusiast asked a group of local builders to invest in the community and build the racquet club. He said he would see that people would join. He had the idea of “if you build it, they will come” long before the Field of Dreams movie in 1989 starring Kevin Costner. And so it began with Lee Brohawn, president of Chas. E. Brohawn & Brothers, Inc. general contractors and John W. Tieder, Jr., president of John W. Tieder, Inc. electrical contractor building as owners of the 29,000 square foot metal building which would become the Bay County Racquet Club. Ground was broken on June 19, 1975 and the first tennis league started in winter of 1976. We still have some of those original members. One of the first student members, Jay Aldridge is now one of our teaching pros. Terry Robbins, daughter of Lee Brohawn has been the managing partner at the club since 1999.
